The Voice of a Generation

How Elijah Lee Is Turning Youth Advocacy Into Real Change

At just 18 years old, Elijah Lee is proving that age does not determine impact. The Richmond, Virginia native has spent nearly half of his life working to uplift young people, advocate for equity, and challenge communities to rethink how they invest in youth. For the past eight years, Elijah has dedicated himself to finding innovative and creative ways to support children and teenagers, not only in Richmond but across the country.

While many people still stereotype today’s youth as distracted “screen-agers,” Elijah believes young people are far more than that. He says today’s generation is filled with passion, purpose, creativity, and ideas that deserve to be heard. Through his activism, he continuously pushes adults, educators, lawmakers, and organizations to stop underestimating young people and instead begin listening to them.

One of Elijah’s most powerful approaches is the way he activates youth through conversation. He often asks questions like, “What matters to you?” and “What is the society and community you want to live in?” These questions are designed to encourage young people to think critically about their environment, their future, and their role in shaping the world around them. Rather than speaking for youth, Elijah believes in helping them discover and amplify their own voices.

That mission led him to found the nonprofit organization Here Our Voices, a bridge-building organization dedicated to helping children and teenagers nationwide access resources, support systems, funding opportunities, and networking connections. The organization focuses on moving conversations forward around child abuse, childhood trauma, family support, racism, gender equality, and other social challenges affecting young people today. Through Here Our Voices, Elijah has created a platform where youth are not only heard but empowered to create change.

Elijah’s commitment to advocacy also extends directly into government. He regularly attends sessions of the Virginia General Assembly to help advocate for laws that better support youth, people of color, and individuals facing systemic challenges. His work focuses heavily on ensuring young people are represented in policy decisions that directly impact their lives.

Through his involvement with Voters of Tomorrow, Elijah and his team have helped draft and introduce more than 40 pieces of legislation, with over 15 bills successfully becoming law. That level of legislative impact is remarkable for any advocate, especially someone still in their teenage years. His work demonstrates that young people are not waiting for permission to lead; they are already shaping the future in meaningful ways.

Beyond policy and legislation, Elijah also creates spaces for inspiration and empowerment within the community. He organizes an annual youth empowerment event featuring influential speakers, community leaders, and vendors focused on supporting and uplifting young people. These events provide opportunities for youth to connect, learn, and feel encouraged about their potential and future.

Elijah Lee represents a new generation of leadership rooted in action, accountability, and community engagement. His work continues to challenge adults, institutions, and lawmakers to take young voices seriously. More importantly, he is showing young people that their experiences, perspectives, and dreams matter right now, not someday in the future.

In a time when many young people are searching for purpose and representation, Elijah Lee is building bridges, creating opportunities, and helping youth understand that their voice has the power to influence laws, communities, and lives.
